FOR LEPIDOPTEROUS PESTS (moths)
|
TRAP
SELECTION
|
|
The
choice of trap depends primarily on the insect being
monitored. For the smaller moths, such as the Tortricids
(tortrix moth and leaf rollers), which make up the
bulk of fruit tree Lepidopterous pests the trap of
choice is usually the Easiset Delta Trap. These
moths are readily caught on the glue of the insert,
they are quickly counted and the trap is easy to maintain.
The more complex and less economic Wing Trap
represents an alternative to the Delta Trap
that is nevertheless preferred by some specialists.
|
|
With
larger species such as Geometrids (loopers), Lymantrids
(tussock moths) and Cossids (goat moths), the sticky inserts
of Delta traps become quickly overloaded or contaminated
by wing scales. For larger moths, particularly when higher
numbers are present, the AgriSense Funnel Trap is
recommended. Having a large retaining bucket the Funnel
Trap can effectively collect very large number of moths.
If only low populations of the larger species are likely
to be encountered, then the Delta Trap is preferred
due to its greater sensitivity.
Funnel
traps should also be considered if the area to be monitored
is particularly dusty. Large amounts of dust landing on
the glue insert of the Delta Trap can impede its
effectiveness.

TRAP
SELECTION
|
|
|
For
those fruit fly species (Mediterranean, Oriental
and Queensland fruit flies and Melon fly) where
parapheromone lures are available (Magnet
" long life plugs), the choice of trap
is dictated by the size of the expected population
and whether dust is liable to be a problem.
In and areas where the sticky bases of Easiset
DeltaTraps are rendered less effective by
dust, the Dri-Fly (Bucket) Trap is recommended.
In temperate, non-dusty areas where populations
are not excessive, the Delta Trap is
preferred for its greater sensitivity. If populations
are large, however, the Dri-Fly Trap
offers the advantage of greater capacity.
The
Jackson Trap is used to detect
the simple presence or absence of Mediterranean
fruit fly as a quarantine pest.
When
used with parapherornone lures it should
be remembered that only male flies are
trapped. If trapping of both males and
females is required, the Dome Trap
used with protein hydrolysate (or autolysate)
alone or together with Magnet plugs
is recommended.

Olive
flies are monitored with combinations of Vertical
Yellow Sticky Traps both with and without
pheromone lures. The Vertical Yellow Sticky
Trap alone attracts males and females (by
virtue of its colour). When baited with the
pheromone lure there is a significant increase
(10x) in the male catch at the onset of sexual
activity. Dome Traps baited with either
ammonium salts or protein hydrolysate are then
deployed to catch females (and males) which
are inspected for egg maturity. For more information
